A very fine Enfield No 5 Mk I Jungle Carbine

DSC_0407

Finding No 5’s in this condition is a rare thing – I must have something right somewhere! – this one is in great original condition; Practically Unused.  It is one of the last produced so maybe never had to experience the rigours of jungle combat.  The sidewall is engraved as follows, to bear this point out; “No5 Mk I (F) / 10/47  AC3341”  The serial number tallies with the date of October 1947.  The LHS but-socket also bears the serial number under an inverted crows foot mark.  The rear face of the bolt arm is marked with the matching serial number.  Standard issue Jungle carbine with detachable ten-shot box magazine.  Enfield bolt action turn-bolt system with interchangeable bolt head marked “0” which cocks on closing The zero indicates the first stage of bolt head clearance which would infer little to NO use.  Square head cocking piece and correct hollow bolt head.  The action also bears the correct lightening cuts to reduce weight.  The barrel knox form will also have the weight reduction cut-outs if the hand guard were removed.  Excellent five-groove Enfield rifling within a spotless bore. No rusting or misting and certainly no pitting.

Overall this carbine is 40″ long.  The barrel is 20.1/2 including the flash hider and the trigger pull length is a nominal 14″.  The flash hider was fitted to reduce muzzle flash within the close confines of the jungle.  As no change was made to the ammunition, the cordite would still be burning beyond the length of such a short barrel.  The flash hider includes twin ear protection for the foresight block and a bayonet stud for the specially developed carbine bayonet.  The lightening of the weapon and shortening did however have an unpleasant secondary effect, of increasing  felt recoil on the user. Consequently a rubber kick pad was developed which is contained in a pressed steel but-plate, however, it is questionable if this actually served the purpose it was designed for!  As the surface area of contact was reduced it concentrated the impact onto a smaller zone, thus once again, increasing the felt recoil!

Chambered in the standard .303 and fitted with a specifically designed carbine flip-up rear sight graduated from 200 to 800 yards.  In the folded down position, there is an aperture battle sight for distances up to 200 yards which enables rapid target acquisition.  The rifle itself shows very little sign of use, in that there is very little high edge wear to the black finish on the action or any other components.  The hardwood beech stock is in excellent condition with virtually no perceptible damage and a fine and even overall patina.  The fore end is fitted with a steel end cap of the later type which ties in with the production date.  The carbine is fitted with a rear side attachment point for the sling and a sling is included.  On the inside of the green canvass sling are makers marking;  “A.B.L. / J.D.  /  1952.”

It is very unusual to find these weapons in such good untouched condition even to the point that the bolt face looks unused !  A chance to get your hands on a really clean, very usable No 5 Jungle Carbine and fill a place in that military rifle collection which will not need any improvement.DSC_0417
