A fine example of the No5 Mk I Jungle carbineDSC_0667

Chambered in the standard British .303 calibre. Enfield bolt action with a detachable ten-shot magazine.  Serial number BB1274 on both bolt arm and butt-socket LHS.  Measurements: Length 39.1/2″ overall.  Barrel length 20.1/2″ including flash hider.  Trigger pull length 13.1/4″ to center.

Standard and correct No5 machined action with lightening cuts and drilled bolt-head. Barrel has the fluted hex form under the hand-guard.  Correct British Suncorite black gloss finish to action, bolt and wrist.  Much of the remaining areas have been reduced to traces of the same within the protected areas or dark corners.  The wear has resulted in a pleasing grey patina which only time can properly apply.  There is high edge wear on the action, magazine and trigger guard.

The stock is a good dark walnut with all the signs of a military life.  The overall feeling with the woodwork is that it has remained together throughout the years, for this reason the butt-stock has not been replace.  The butt absolutely matches the balance of the woodwork but it has lost a portion of the bearing surface at the top of the wrist.  This is only apparent as a step down behind the socket – please see photos.  The colour of the timber has remained the same, which suggests a period of time has passed since the event of loss.  Also the butt has absolutely no movement or rattle to it and is still performing its task as required.  The LHS of the same has been stamped  “2. II I. / 126”  – meaning unknown, could be a unit designation.  Rubber butt-plate intact with some wear on the top radius.  Rear sling mount affixed to rubber butt-pad surround.  The wrist is marked with acceptance and inspection marks on the underside,  just behind the trigger guard; “M47A / Crown/M/21.”

The for-end is marked to the rifle with the serial number and clearly readable.  There is a small “M47 / broad arrow”  just behind the sling swivel.  The LHS outer butt-stock is marked with the BSA makers code of “M47 C / 1945 / BB1274”  The safety catch above those markings carry the same manufacturers code.  Correct carbine rear flip up aperture and battle sight fitted to the rear action bridge.  This part is also marked “F” for Fazakerley and graduated from 2 to 800 yards.  The detachable magazine which is released by the lever within the trigger guard, is numbered to another rifle number H4204.  BSA marked trigger guard.  The receiver carries valid German CIP proofs and calibre designation.  Rear of bolt handle marked with matching serial number.  The bolt head ( an M47C marked part ) is a “O” graded fitment indicating the rifle has a lot of life left in the head space.

The bore is a 5-grove LH twist Enfield type in the most excellent condition the writer has seen in a very long time.  Deep sharp rifling which is very clean with little sign of use, no pitting or frosting.  The flash-hider is a M47C marked component from BSA Shirley attached by the double pin method.  It incorporates the bayonet lug for the special Jungle Carbine bayonet.  This is a great looking and potentially accurate rifle from the last years of the Second World War.  It does appear that a previous owner has attempted to improve accuracy by bedding the rifle, as the compound can be seen around the edges of the lower portion of the action and stock – as of moment of writing this has remained untested.
