Brazilian Model 1908 Full Length Infantry Rifle
A clean example of the Brazilian Model 1908 rifle in 7mm x 57 Mauser. With a 5-shot internal magazine which can be stripper loaded. The white action is clearly marked on the RHS of the receiver ring “E 00 (Added later) MODEL 1908.” On the other side is the serial number “1590/ f.” Manufactures’ details upon the outer action wall; “DEUTSCHE WAFFEN – UND / MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN,”. 100,000 Model 1908’s were made in 1913 for Brazil and are they are believed to be long rifles. The bolt does not match showing “1562. ” Fine Mauser action, very similar to the GEW 98, but seemingly more finely finished. Very smooth bolt operation with straight arm bolt and flag safety to rear. Bolt release in the usual place at rear RHS of action – blued. Good clear Brazilian crest to the receiver – slightly worn on the detail.
The balance of barrel and furniture are blackened, with the exception of the tangent rear sight. The rear sight is graduated from 300 to 2000 meters. Front inverted “V” on a block with a cross-hatched rear slope to avoid glare. Superb nitra-blue finish to the slide. Other similarities exist with the Gew 98 in that it has a very similar stock with a semi-pistol grip, a cross bolt, a steel id-disk on the RHS of the buttsock. Stock bands held in place by springs. Both locking screws for the trigger plat under are a/f and the components show mixed numbers. H-type front band with clip under for putting the sling into the position for marching.
The rifle measures 49″ in length. The round barrel is 29″ long and the Pull is 13″ to centre. Stocked in a straight semi-pistol grip stock of refreshes walnut with a handguard which surrounds the rear sight for protection. Bayonet stud and but half length cleaning rod a/f. Mid barrel band includes front sling swivel. Rear mounting point for sling is as the Gew 98 providing only the base attached to the stock, this requires the sprung opening type sling attachment as per the Gew 98 again. The polished steel butt-plate shows no numbers. The magazine follower shows yet another number but is nicely blued and holds open when empty.
Mechanically fine. A handsome looking rifle with a clean stock that shows another serial number below the sling mount. One of the best points with this example is the condition of the bore, it is in fine condition with a four grove right-hand twist. Excellent rifling, no pitting, misting or disruption, showing little sign of use. This rifle with its long barrel and good bore could be a competition winner. German CIP nitro proofs. An economical way of shooting a long barrel Mauser.
