A fine Model 1894 Winchester Carbine in the popular .30 w.c.f. calibre

DSC_0599

The most elegant and easily used of all the Winchester lever guns with its roots back in the true bad-lands of the American West.  Chambered in a calibre that has probably been one of the most popular Winchester ever built.  The rapidly slick cycling of the lever action at its best with little recoil to worry the shooter.  This is an iconic rifle from an iconic manufacturer.  Overall the carbine is a nominal 30″ in length with a round blued barrel of 20″ length.  The pull measures 13.1/8″ to the center of the smooth trigger.  At the back is a flat, oval steel butt-plate on an American Black Walnut butt-stock.  The fore-end is a matching walnut secured by a single barrel band.  On the left of the top tang, right at the front of the stock, is a slight 1.1/2″ shake in the timber which looks to have been repaired some time ago.  Almost impossible to feel under the pad of your highly sensitive trigger pinky,  I didn’t notice it until I was examining the photos to use on this page.

The carbines serial number 1931553 is marked into the underneath of the action just in-front of the lever pivot.  This Winchester is in its original factory finish which is in spectacularly good condition for a rifle of this vintage. The action and barrel show only couple of minor surface scratches and the kind of light surface contamination that would be persuaded to move off with the mildest wire wool and some good gun oil.   On close examination there do not seem to be any faults that scream out from the “Winchester Proof Steel”or require attention.  This tidy carbine only shows the signs of general usage and proud ownership by folk that don’t want to see it damaged.

The breech and the rear of the barrel are both clearly marked with the Winchester proof mark, “W/P” within an oval.  The barrel has the model and make details as follows: ” MADE IN NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL /  WINCHESTER  / TRADE MARK,  / MODEL 94 — 30-30–.”  Then as a hint to its’ past it has both British and German nitro proof marks upon it.

Other standard features include the lever safety in the lower tang, standard sprung steel open sights and a front sight protected by a sight hood.  Full length tubular magazine under the barrel also secured by a band just behind the front sight ramp.  Sprung loading gate set into the RHS of the action.  Serrated hammer spur. The majority of the screw heads on the sides of the action and other significat parts are relatively good and have not suffered at the hands of the tinkerer.

In all a good Winchester 94 Carbine which has had a good life so far and has plenty more to give on the ranges.  The bore is excellent and the action smooth but still positive.
