Schmidt-Rubin M1911 Rifle. (f 241) SOLD

Created on October 3rd 2012

A Good clean example of the M1911 Rifle in 7.5 Swiss

Full length rifle with an excellent bore.  Serial number 335058 for 1912.  Although, records only show production starting at 355001 – which is interesting.

The rifles overall length is 58.5/8″.  The barrel is 30.3/4″ long and has four grooves with a right hand twist.  The rifling twist is 1:10.  There is a standard 6 shot detachable magazine which also bears a matching serial number.  Open ramp type rear sight graduated to 2000 meters with highly polished faces making it easier to read the markings clearly. Simple blade front sight mounted on a dovetail which will tap from side to side for adjustment.

Pale full-length hardwood stock with finger grooves, which has the 1889 barrel collar just visible within the fore-end.  Also noticeable is the finely fitted semi-pistol grip stock which has been added to the straight stock.  The stock is in good clean condition for its age and shows the usual signs of a long military life in service.  Steel butt plate marked with the Swiss acceptance stamp of a simple cross and the last two numbers of the serial number on top of the flat tang.  The stock has the two barrel bands with swing swivels, also proof marked.  The hinged front barrel band incorporates a stacking hook and bayonet lug, both are stamped with the cross.

The long action bears the three elongated grooves, two at the rear and one on the side of the action, for lightening in weight and easy recognition.  The breech and breech-end of the barrel both have multiple markings on them, most noticeably the matching serial number, and a larger “P55”   Also right on the apex of the breech is an “M” with a cross over in a grave-stone shaped cartouche; this is the federal inspectors marking of Major Muhlemann who was in service in that position from 1913 to 1914.  This helps confirm the date of manufacture.

The bolt is the modified type with the locking lugs situated at the front of the bolt locking sleeve and also bears the serial number.  The bolt is polished and finished in the white  with good traces of case-colour hardening on the rear shroud.  Bolt removal is affected by depressing the long flat lever on the right-hand side of the action and withdrawing the bolt by the circular cocking piece.  Safety can be applied when loaded by pulling back on the ring shaped cocking piece and turning 45 degrees into the safe groove.

Finish on the action is a high quality blue with only high edge wear and most of the blue remaining.  The action will stay open when the magazine is emptied.  All parts have the Swiss cross acceptance mark on them.  There is slight damage to the red plastic bolt handle.  The action is excellent, the bore the same, with no pitting or misting and strong rifling.  This rifle also comes with the correct muzzle cover which is also stamped with the acceptance mark.

A classic design which no other country has copied or tried to use.  Reliable and very accurate and a pleasure to shoot.
