Mauser 71/84 Rifle……………….SOLD

Created on March 13th 2016

A complete example of the Mauser 71/84 Rifle – battered but with an excellent bore

This is a sizeable rifle – its sheer bulk would be imposing to most. With a bayonet fixed, more than a match for its contemporaries.  It measures a good 51″ in overall length ( or 1 meter 30 to our continental friends)  The round barrel is 31.3/4″ long and the trigger pull 13.1/4″  This rifles long barrel (80 cm) was part of the secret to its impressive accuracy.  Chambered in a heafty 11mm black powder cartridge, this was Germany’s first repeating rifle.  Single shot operation could be set by the switch mounted on the rear of the action.

Although this 71/84 is battered and without most of its original finish, internally where it counts, the bore looks excellent. It has a four-grove right-hand twist.  There is the slightest misting or even mild pitting about half way down but this may prove to be removable with the correct cleaning solutions.  The groves and lands all have clean sharp edges and are uninterrupted for the length of the bore.  These rifles can be successfully shot with careful reloading, this one should prove no exception. (Rifle would require CIP proofing and adding to FAC)

The stock is battered but complete.  It has all its Imperial “FW” cartouches and there is a repaired hairline crack in the wrist.  Otherwise, overall it shows heavy usage by the dents and dings that adorn it; almost like trophies of combat.   This rifle was built in the Amberg plant as the crest shows on the top flat of the first barrel stage.  It was also passed by numerous inspectors as their markings show on many parts of the rifle, not, least of all the right hand 45 degree flat of the barrel.  The obverse show the simple crown of Prince Ludwig and the serial number which is 18900.  It also has the actual bore size of 10.95 towards the breech.  The action carries the serial number and model designation 71/84 on the LHS.  On the RHS of the action the date 1887 and 87 are clear to see.

The straight arm bolt carries the number of another rifle, “15782” and has a flag safety to the rear.  Operation is smooth.  The substantial rear sights are graduated from 400 to 1600 meters.  The barrel is secured by three barrel bands, the middle one carrying the forward sling swivel.  The rifle has a tubular 8 round magazine within the forend and a magazine cut-off towards the rear LHS of the action.  The rear sling swivel is mounted on the forward curve of the actual trigger guard.  The rifle is fitted with a steel butt-plate with an upper tang which is unit marked; “3.GG R / E. 1. 6”.  There is a stacking hook of the front of the magazine tube and the front barrel band also has the bayonet lug mounted on the RHS.  Simple inverted V front sight, dovetailed into a block with register mark – adjustable by tapping from side to side.

Magazine feed / cut-of not tested but seems to function.  A war-torn piece of Imperial German military history.
