No 4 MkI* by Savage……SOLD

Created on November 18th 2014

A good example of the No 4 MkI* Enfield as produced by the American firm Savage

No 4 Savage f452 001

Of normal Enfield specification in the form of the MK I * with an overall length of 44″.  A barrel length of 25″ and a trigger pull length of  13.1/4″ in this case.  The rifle has a detachable ten-round box magazine and works with a standard Enfield bolt action mechanism.  The bolt cocks on closing and will eject as it is withdrawn.  The current fitment of bolt head is a number “0”.  The rifle can be clip loaded through a clip guide which sits over the action.  The flip-up sights are mounted on the rear action bridge. In the flat or laying-down position there is a battle sight good for 100 to 200 yards then, in the upright position an aperture sight graduated to 1300 yards.  This rear sight has to be in the upright position to withdraw the bolt, just a quirk of the design.  Chambered in .303, British Nitro Proofed.

Rectangular cocking piece marked “M47A and broad arrow“.  Unusually for Enfields the rifle number is not repeated on the back of the bolt handle.  On the LHS of the action wall, on the angled surface are the markings; ” U.S. PROPERTY” then on the vertical sidewall the following; ” flaming bomb mark  S. No 4 MKI* ”  The bomb is the American acceptance stamp.  The serial number is stamped into the LHS butt-socket and reads “86C5750”  The usual heavy chipped gloss paint is trying its best to obscure the markings.

The mid band and the front nose-cap band are of pressed steel construction and the later is stamped with the Savage “S”  Front sight protector and muzzle incorporating the bayonet fittings for the Spike type bayonet. The woodwork is in very good condition and at present, protected by a heavy gloss finish (if wanted this can be removed upon request)  The butt-stock is marked with the Canadian “C” around broad arrow and is fitted with a very fine brass butt-plate, with trap.  The detachable ten-shot magazine appears to be unused.  The sling swivels are fitted with a good dark green military canvas sling.

The best feature that this rifle hides is the condition of the bore.  Although it is only a two groove fitment it is in very fine condition.  There is little wear visible, all the features associated with a good bore are sharp and well defined – it is going to be a pleasure to shoot.
