U.S. First Year of Production Model 1894 Springfield Krag Rifle

F 383 Krag Rifle 001

Caliber US Govt’ .30-40, five shot  internal magazine.  The rifle is 49.1/4″ in overall length, the barrel is a nominal 30 in length and the trigger pull is 13.3/8″  Stocked in American Black Walnut.  This 1894 has a short hand-guard which surrounds and helps to protect the rear sight and a one-piece butt-stock and forend.  There are two early government final proof “P” marks just behind the trigger guard.  The readable one is of the very early script  type.  There seems to be no other type of marks on the stocks at all. The stock is fitted with two sling swivels and a steel butt plate with cleaning trap, contents A/F.

What is quite interesting about this stock is that is shows the early cleaning rod channel which has been filled in at Armoury in an expert manner with a wooden infill.  This relates the policy of not wasting perfectly perfectly good stocks, when the three part cleaning rod was adopted and the single piece type dropped.

The rifle is loaded by opening the unusual loading gate mounted on the RHS of the action and then almost dropping in the fresh cartridges and snapping the gate shut. At this point the internal spring loaded follower will push the cartridges across, underneath the action and up the other side, into position to be picked up by the bolt.  It is an interesting action and in a serviceable rifle will not fail to carry out the operation.

The action is marked as follows: ” U.S.  /  1894  SPRINGFIELD ARMOURY  5554″  Note the lack of the word “MODEL” .  The rear sights are a ladder tyre graduated on the side of the ramp, 100 to 400 yards and when upright from 100 to 2000 yards with a total of 4 aiming points.

The bolt has a single locking lug at the front end and a dished face to accommodate the rimmed cartridge.  The bolt handle is straight and plain.  The safety is at the rear of the bolt and acts much like a Mauser type, as a flag, with the upright position making the rifle safe.  The rifle has a checkered cocking piece  and it is possible to decock the rifle of the reverse by simply taking hold of the same and manually pulling it out or the reverse.  Mounted on the RH rear side of the action is a switch type mechanism which acts as a magazine cut-off device.  There is a bayonet lug under the simple nose-cap at the front of the stock.  The front sight, a simple shaped pinned blade mounted on the barrel block.  The action is superbly smooth and operates well.  The bore is really excellent;  it is clean, not pitted, not frosted and with excellent strong un-interrupted rifling.

F 383 Krag Rifle 001

These rifles are very accurate and very comfortable to shoot.  The record in their day, held by a trooper using standard sights was twenty-seven consecutive bulls eyes at 1000 yards !  Not bad for a battle rifle.  The rifle is freshly London Proofed in 2014.
