Created on June 21st 2011

The Classic Cavalry Carbine from the Wild West,  Model 1884

Last of the original Carbines made.  Serial number 412263 on rear of  breach.  Low arch trapdoor breech marked on top “US / MODEL / 1884”.   21.1/2″  Round blued barrel in .45-70 Govt’ calibre.

Flat flush fitting lock plate with American Eagle and “US / SPRINGFIELD” in front of hammer.  Half stocked in American Black Walnut, 30″ long.  Overall length 41″.   Single blued barrel band maked with Springfield inspectors mark “U”.

Buffington rear sights marked on the side of the ramp with a “C” for carbine, graduated to 1500 yards with a “C” at the top of the ladder.  Two piece trigger guard still retaining a nice original blue with serrated trigger.  3 position lock.

On the left side of the weapon is the saddle ring and bar – nicely let into the stock.  The barrel is marked just forward of the breech with “V / P / eagles head /P”.   Also with an “R” at the extreme edge visible above the forend, and an “A” on top.  The steel butt plate is marked with a clear “US” on the top tang and incorporates the butt trap with compartments within for the cleaning rods.

The whole carbine has an even aged patina all over with a strong percentage of original blue remaining. Elsewhere age is turning it silver and brown.  The stock is fine with no splits or cracks and benifits from being fairly close grained for a military weapon.  A good bore with light misting and a good action with a strong ejector.
