This is the heavy and reliable Mauser actioned, 5-shot internal magazine  model which the American company Winchester supplied to the British government during the First World War.   At first this rifle was unpopular with the troops it was issued to because of its weight – 9 lbs 6 ounces.  However, it soon became apparent that the heavy rifle was accurate and able of pulling off some impressive long distance results.  A quantity of them were therefore converted for sniper use.  In their later life they were adopted as excellent target rifles and many were converted into the basis of efficient target rifles, by companies like Parker-Hale.  It is for this last reason that the numbers of original surviving examples are dwindling and they are becoming harder to source. The unmolested survivors are becoming more desirable.

This rifle does come with its original battle and ladder sight ( not volley sight ) but, also comes fitted with the popular Parker-Hale aperture sight designed for the Mark Seven .303 British ammunition.  This is fitted on the rear bridge of the action and is fully adjustable both for windage and elevation.  Graduations on the two axis and knurled adjusting buttons allow for easy and accurate adjustment.  The aperture also is adjustable for size by a series of clicks on a rotating wheel that is mounted off-centre of the main eye-piece.   The target sight sits over the top of The sprung bolt release catch to the LHS rear of the action.  On the opposite side is the safety catch which operates when pulled to the rear and not only stops the bolt from releasing but locks the bolt handle down by the action of a pin which acts on the bolt handle.

The trigger guard and floor plate beneath are both in good condition with strong bluing remaining.  The trigger is serrated and the floor plate can be opened to drop the rounds if required by simply pressing the nose of a round into the opening at the rear of the plate.  At the front of the assembly is an extra sling swivel for the mounting of a more target orientated sling.  There are tow sling swivels and a stacking hook.  The front nose cap has the bayonet stud underneath with a clear “W” for Winchester on the stud.  The simple blade fore-sight is guarded by “ears” to either side.  The crown is good.  This rifle is know to be a top scorer on the range.

The action is fine and the bore excellent, clean with strong 5-groove rifling.  The blueing on the action is very good for original with negligible wear.  The action wall outside is marked with the original Kings proofs and a Ducks foot or broad arrow designating acceptance by the War Department of the time.  The butt-plate has the usual steel trap for the cleaning equipment and also a typical armoury painted number “116” across its face. The butt has a plain brass ID disk set into the RHS.  Otherwise the rifle is in excellent condition and awaiting its new keeper.
