1828 Pattern Scottish Officers Broadsword…SOLD

1828 Pattern Broadsword to The Invernessshire Militia

This fine and rare sword is attributed to the Invernessshire Militia as etched on the blade. The blade is  32,3/4″ long with double narrow fullers on both sides. Etched with floral designs, crown and “VR” cypher and proof mark and plain brass disc. The blade does show wear consumate with its age but is still bright and the etching clear and sharp.

The makers name and address is clearly shown on the blade as “Firmin & Sons 153 Strand & 13 Conduit Street London” this puts them at this location between 1856 and 1860 within the reign of Victoria.

Standard plain steel basket hilt with pierced hearts and circle decoration. Within is the original buckskin and crimson cloth hilt liner with blue silk edges. The crimson tassel also seems to be an original fitment. Unmollested removable steel bun-shaped pommel.

The scabbard is all steel and in good condition with two suspension rings. Altogether a fine example of a Scottish Officers Basket hilt sword which would grace any serious sword collection.
