k31 Schmidt-Rubin Carbine with Leather Sling

Another good clean example of the straight pull Swiss rifle in 7.5 x 55 calibre.

S/n  736882. Overall length 43.1/2″ and barrel length 25.1/2″.

Full length walnut stock and hand guard. This is the model with the shortest action and the bolt locking lugs at the front; thought to be the best of the Schmidt-Rubins for the lack of movement at the bolt face and therefor the most accurate.

Steel but-plate, the right hand of the but-stock with the Swiss cartouche. Interestingly the finger groves on the fore-end are staggered to take into account of the different position the hands end up in for a left or right hand shooter.

The detachable six shot box mgazine, numbered, is situated immediately infront of the trigger guard. Semi-pistol grip stock.  Fixed rear sight, graduated to 1500 meters, with adjustable front blade sight. All components have the Swiss cross inspection mark and most are numbered. the bolt housing and bright bolt both numbered with the serial number and the action shroud clearly marked with the Swiss cross on shield.  Front barrel band incorporates bayonet lug and stacking hook.  The rear tang has the letters “58 / V / P” clearly stamped upon it.

The bore is excellent condition and the action cycles smoothly.  The metalwork has not been refinished and shows mostly high edge wear with thinning ontop of the action and on the protruding portion of the barrel behind the front sight.  The woodwork is intact, not split or showing shakes but with the usual smattering of dents and bruises from long service.

On removing the steel butt-plate, there is a small piece of paper, beneath the plate, held by one of the screws, with the original soldiers name and service number or Unit with the rifle serial number on the back.  This is written in pencil.  The weapon has its original brown leather issued sling with inspection stamp.  This is a boxed cross over “Sz” stamped into the leather, the strap has its original sprung steel strap clip with some original black gloss finish.  The carbine has the bright finish bolt handle and the bolt release is beneath that on the same side.

A nice example of an interesting rifle with Swiss reliability built in “as a given”.
