Schmidt-Rubin M1911 Rifle. (F 1270)
Created on June 17th 2011
A good example of the 1911 Schmidt-Rubin Model Rifle
This example is the full length rifle with the 30″ barrel with six round detachable box magazine. S/n 349272 in 7.5 x 55mm. Serial number puts production in approx’ 1912. A solitary “P” has been added meaning the rifle was sold to the soldier it was issued to after his service was over. The breech and barrel have other stamps including, “+/V” for Federal inspection by a Major Vogelsang. The intwined “BP” Proof stamp of Schmidt-Rubin. “B” – unknown possibly Basel the canton? Also, a mark that appears on most parts, an upright small Swiss Cross.
The 1911 model is distinguishable immediately by the gap between the trigger guard and the box magazine underneath, the semi-pistol grip, and the two grooves in the top of the receiver. To be certain, on examining the bolt when removed the locking lugs are at the front of the sleeve yet the bolt is still full length. Now includes period brown leather strap.
51.1/2″ in overall length with full lengh stock and handguard in walnut. The forend having finger groves under the rear ladder sight. All parts having matching numbers as expected, smaller components showing only the last three digits. Matching numbered barrel, action and bolt and magazine.
Steel butt plate with “272” and the National Swiss Cross on tang. Just in front on the top flat of the butt is the word “BASEL-LAND”. The side of the stock sports a small Swiss Cross cartouche. Underneath, is the numbered magazine (matching). Rear sights are graduated from 300 to 2000 meters and the bolt handle is of the red bakelite type. Front band incorporates bayonet lug and curved tip stacking hook. Easily recognisable by the large ring manual cocking piece at the rear of the action.
The rifle is in all its original finish with an excellent bore. The wood work is dented and scratched, but there are no splits or cracks. There is high point wear on most components which all add to the genuine feeling that the rifle has, at no point, been re-finished and is entirely original. This is a good example of the marque, and not one to run up against, in any shooting competition with a half competent shooter behind it. These rifles have a well earned reputation for accuracy. A Classic and still a marvel of engineering.
