Interesting and Rare K98

A standard Mauser Karabiner 98 by any other name.  The serious K98 collector will take note of this – it is not an every day K.  It is the history behind this rifle that sets the scene for the weapons scarcity.  In truth, it is not a 100% original example but, has other strings to its bow which may make it worth considering.  It came to us as a pile of bits, included in a deal, as a sweetener.  The previous owner had all good intentions to re-build it but basically lost interest, time (and the barrel !) with the project.   We have completed the rifle with a Lothar-Walther barrel and mated it with a correct Kriegsmarine stock.  So, in effect, one has a brand new weapon to run-in.  These rifles were only issued to the Luftwaffe and the Navy. Chambered in standard 8mm Mauser (7.92 x 57mm) 5-shot internal magazine.  Mauser bolt system with flag safety.

Produced at Steyr in Austria they were discovered on the production line when Hitler declared the Anschluss on 13th March 1938.  So, like it or not Steyr were now working for the “little man with the ridiculous Chaplin moustache.”  Within the factory they found these rifles that were being produced and marked as “G29”  One theory is that they were originally an export contract for Columbia but the Germans intercepted them. They were then completed at Steyr Daimler-Puch and had the German manufacturers code (660) added to the receiver with the date of manufacture below along with the “/40” on the side wall.  They then were issued to the services mentioned above.  This example has been set into a Navy stock marked with the “M” of the Kriegsmarine.

As this rifle was originally a G.I. bring back from the US it had an incorrectly matched bolt – that has now been force-matched to the receiver. The rest of the components are the correct type but carry other serial numbers.  The stock is also force-matched to the weapon.  So correct laminated stock and milled components – with a brand new Lothar-Walther barrel.  Overall the weapon is the standard 43.1/2″ in length.  The barrel is 23.5/8″ (600mm) long.  The trigger Pull is 13″ to centre of the flat steel butt-plate.  The stock has the steel strip-down disk in position and the standard slotted cut for the leather sling.

The rear sights are numbered to the original rifle, serial number being “7551”  and graduated from 100 to 2000 meters.  The front sight is hooded and the cleaning rod is in position.  The trigger guard, floor-plate and follower. Mid-band, “H-band” are the correct type of parts showing waffenamts but incorrectly numbered.  The receiver and rear sight band show waffenamts and the barrel also shows the serial number.  To all intents and purposes, this rifle looks the part and only very close inspection will reveal its true story but, not before showing its quite unusual origins. At the most these rifle were only made like this for a very short period, possibly totalling only two years, which is minimal for this weapon in general.  On the inside of the pistol grip the stock shows a very professional repair to a very slight crack, involving four hardwood dowels – this may have been armoury?

Remember, also this rifle now has a brand new Lothar-Walther barrel and is freshly proofed in the UK – its going to need to be “run-in” but once a quantity of ammunition has been through it its going to return pleasing results.  So challenge yourself to see if you could be as good as the Wehrmacht with a new rifle if you dare; and pick up a rare instrument in the bargain.
