Slide Action Large Frame Colt Lightning Rifle.
This large frame Colt Lightning was also known as the “Express Model”. Serial number 4725 for 1890..40-60 cal with 28″ octagonal barrel. When produced it sported a blued finish which has now changed to an all-over even brown patina. The furniture consists of a walnut stock and for-end.
This model has aLyman blade front sight and adjustable rear sights. The two line address/patent dates are marked on the top of the barrel, the left rear flat is marked “40-60-260” with a large Rampant Colt on the left side of the receiver. It has the full magazine, checkered for-end and smooth straight grip stock with a crescent steel butt-plate. Only about 4500 of these rifles were produced by Colt between 1887 and1894, we can presume that this one must be one of the last Colt Lightnings.
Condition: Considered to be good. Strong traces of the original blue finish remain on the bottom of the frame and the trigger guard. Some thinning blue remains on the receiver mixed with a smooth brown patina. The remaining surfaces mostly have a smooth brown patina. The wood is fine with a few overall scattered dings and dents with crisp chequering on the for-end. All the markings are sharp. The bore is very good and the action works fine.
Note: This Colt Lightning Rifle benefits from exemption as an antique under the Firearms act and may be held without obtaining a certificate. It is known as having an Obsolete Caliber.
