Marlin 1881 in .40-60
A fairly rare beast in gun collecting terms as Marlin only produced around 20,000 of this model between 1881 and 1892, chambered in various calibers. This one is in the obsolete .40-60 caliber. Serial number 9749 stamped under the breech-end of the action.
28″ Octagonal barrel with German “Rocky-Mountain” foresight and buckhorn type as rear. Full length tubular magazine under. Walnut stock with crescent steel buttplate and steel cap forend. Excellent bore with bright, clean, strong rifling and no pitting or misting. – Once again the US market has turned up an outstanding example with a clean bore which looks almost unused, this really is a pleasantly preserved example of one of these large caliber rifles.
The top of the barrel marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO, NEW.HAVEN, CT, U.S.A” with patent dates underneath. “40 CAL” marked on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the action. The barrel and action are an even grey brown colour with minor traces or original blue in protected areas, the majority of the original finish is preserved underneath the lever on the lower tang. There are a few small dings and two more serious dents in the stock which have been finished over professionally. Smooth operating action in good order with no visible rusting on any of the internal parts. A shootable or collectable chunk of American Firearms History.
£2450.
