A desirable Obsolete caliber Winchester Carbine
Serial Number 380277 for first quarter of 1906
A genuine Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine (SRC) in .32-40 Calibre which in the UK is on section 58(ii) of the firearms act list of Obsolete Calibres. Calibre marked on barrel just forward of chamber, also Winchester proof mark on barrel and top of action. Winchester address and patent dates on barrel behind fore-end band.
Overall length 38″. Barrel length 20″. Stock length13″. Good musket style butt and steel plate. Fore-end secured by a single band, a second band between front sight and muzzle. Muzzle crowned perfectly. Single blade fore-sight with ladder rear sights graduated.
Serial number found under action at front – clearly readable. Top action tang marked with “MODEL 1894 / WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK”. Action down to about 30% finish all with genuine wear especially on high points. Destinct ” rub-mark” where sadle ring contacts wall of action at two separate points. Blued bolt with about 50% of finish, case-hardened hammer still showing about 15% of colours. Round barrel stronger with approx’ 65-75% of blueing but with even wear all over. Full length magazine tube turning from blue to grey/brown but once again even all over. Bands starting to turn brown. Sights blued. Butt-plate now almost completely brown. Lever and trigger guard 99% silvered.
Walnut stocks excellent with minor dents or scratches, no splits or shakes and not loose. There are no unpleasant dents or scratches that stand out and draw the eye. Action smooth as a Winchester ever is, and bore excellent, with no pitting or misting.
This is one of those guns that crop up now and then that remind you why you started in this business in the first place, its so good, its just a pleasure to handle it and then even to pass it on to someone who genuinely appreciates these fine things.
