Pattern 1897 Egyptian Infantry Officers Sword in Standard Field Scabbards

Produced by the famous British maker Firmin & Sons Ltd.  One of the oldest and most well known British Sword makers, indicating a high standard of quality.  This sword is produced to exact British Army specifications as President Nasser held the British in high regard.  Hence all the features of the particular pattern are strictly reproduced on this sword.  Prisdent Nasser ordered high quality ceremonial sword in this pattern, specifically showing one star on the shild (detail) representing the Republic of Eygpt between 1953 and 1958.  This was before the country merged with Syria to become the UAR (using two stars; representing the two countires within one)  It is unusual to be able to pindown production on military swords as so many have been produced !

The swords are 37.3/4″ from point to pommel.  This pattern offered more protection to the user with its 3/4 steel guard surrounding the hand. Pierced foliate design with the “Eagle of Saladin” with shield and one star (United Republic of Egypt). Underneath the shield is a scroll which (apparently) reads “United Arab Republic”.  The polished straight steel blade is 32″ long and is etched on both sides repeating the Eagel design twice.  On the flat ricassio is the clear makers mark of Firmin & Sons Ltd with the winged dragon and wheat sheaf within.

Round steel pommel, fish skin covered handle wound on three-core brass wire.  Hatched back strap which provides grip.  One example has its leather washer the other is a/f.   Straight brown leather covered scabbards with hard leather drags. slightly bent.  Sliver mouths and hanging strap attached to rear.  A couple of very fine Arabic Dress Swords made by good English maker.

£ 100. each or £ 190. for the pair.
