Weimar to Russian Captured K98k Mauser for 1939 …….(F 1232)

K98k Mauser from Borsigwalde of 1939
Produced just at the end of the Weimar period, an early K in standard form. This is almost the most certain way of purchasing what you know you are getting, in the field of Mausers these days. This unfortunate rifle fell into the hands of the Soviets. Receiver code indicates the rifle started life as a regular “243” – German piece in 1939. At some stage , later on it was then unfortunate enough to be sent to the Eastern Front along with its unlucky user. Somewhere after June 1941 they parted company and the rifle ended up in a Russian military facility where, it was unceremoniously stripped down, checked over then reassembled along with thousands of others in a very mixed fashion. The serial number from the main components “4795 c” is electro-pencilled on the bolt body, (attempts have been made to cover that up.) It was then thrown back into the desperate fight against the Nazis by the Soviets. It is difficult, due to quantities produced, to plot the progress of most military rifles, but you can be fairly certain this was the way the war panned out for this particular K98.
Apart from the mixed component numbers, another obvious sign is the deeply stamped numbers in the side of the butt-stock. These were put there by the Soviets. Everything else about the rifle is as a K98 should be but in a typically mixed fasion. Still chambered in 7.92mm. Same magazine capacity, same dimensions. Later laminated stock with cupped butt-plate. Cleaning rod a/f. Condition consumate with age and military usage. Clearly marked Weimar eagle proofmarks on the LHS of the receiver and barrel. On the other side of the receiver are three clear Nazi Waffenamps.
Reasonable bore, with strong rifling, but dirty and a little rough within the lands. UK proofed. Would qualify as a fun gun or a good example for a renactor. A cheap way to get into Mauser shooting. The never ending supply of Mauser is however starting to dry up, so in a few years, this still may qualify as an interesting or even rare rifle.
