Walter Hardi Tariner Conversion of a Long Rifle
An unusual long rifle to see converted to a small bore caliber. Not strictly all for Military Training, as many were converted by comercial contractors to equip the small bore competitions held in Switzerland. Shooting was held in high esteem in the country and nearly all of the male youths of the country had some experience in the field. This rifle was converted by “WALTER HARDIE. AARAU” as marked upon breech end of barrel upper. Externally almost the same as a standard Model 1889 infantry rifle with one notable exception, the sights are from the M1911 rifle.
Semi-pistol grip bulge on base of wrist, finger groves below sights in forend. Handguard over barrel and stacking hook with curved tip. The same impossibly long bolt of the 1889 with the red rubber bolt handle. Staraight Pull mechanisium, with large cocking ring to rear of bolt. Three lightening groves in top of action. Look closely at the bolt face and you can see the off-center firing pin hole. Obviously the bore is .22, still having the inwardly dished muzzle. Although no purpose is apparent, the magazine is noticeably shorter than the 12 shot big brother, but is still able to be retracted and taken out of battery.
The rifle is still full length, so the round is going to benefit from longer length of rifling acting upon it; increasing accuracy. The rifle is 51.1/4″ in overall length. The round steel barrel is 30.3/4″ long. The trigger Pull to center is 12.1/4″. The rifle retains its bayonet mount and two sling swivels. Rear sight of 1911 type graduated from 300 to 2000 meters.
The action is marked with Swiss Cross acceptance marks and the entwined “BP” firing proof. On the LH quadrant of the same is the serial number; “2895” then later added below is “P A / 13”. The front section of the polished steel bolt has the number “87368 and the Swiss Cross Stamp”. Swiss shield cartouche on RHS of butt-stock. Steel Butt-plate. Bolt release catch on lower RHS of action. All metalwork mellowed with age turning plumb-brown in places. The stock is in very good condition with minimal dents and dings. A rare and highly collectable small bore conversion.
