Imperial German Doves Head Sword

Created on July 14th 2020

A good example of a Imperial German Sword possibly to the Cavalry, M1890

Brass “Doves Head” grip and guard with shargrin covered handle most wire absent.   Sword is 40″ in overall length whilst in scabbard.  The curved, pipe-backed plated blade is 34″ long with a spear point and false top edge.  Single cutting edge with two areas showing damage from possible combat in the form of “cuts” into the edge.

The blade is water etched with a single banner containing the word “EISENHAUER”  which means iron-cutter.    The second etched panel has the owners name within it;- “R.Kohl” ? There are traces of gold leaf within the etched panels.  The scabbard is of steel construction with a blackened finish fitted with brass fittings.  Brass drag with double hangers – suggesting mounted use.

Traces of Verdigris on many of the brass parts.  Minor losses to the plating on the blade but generally in very good condition.  By the lack of inscription on the brass parts I am making an educated guess that this is a sword for the equivalent rank of NCO in the Imperial German Army.  Second guess is that it is a fighting sword not a dress sword – pipe-backed.  Cavalry because of the curvature of the blade and the lack of damage to the drag.  Fighting sword – because of the damage to the blade which can either be caused by contact with another blade or even bone within and unfortunate opponent.

The sword is sound and does not rattle.  Draws nicely, is secure in the scabbard, and the throat washer is present.  Grip binding wire could be added at extra cost.

£ 465.
