No 4 Mk I Bolt Action Rifle……(F 1069)

Created on September 15th 2021

No 4 Mk I Standard British WW2 Battle rifle.

Of normal British Military Specification with a twist of India added.  Chambered in .303 with a ten-shot detachable box magazine.  Fully stocked in dark hardwoods. The twist of India comes in the form of a large woodscrew added transversely through the fore-end.  This was a common practice for rifle adopted and used by the Indian army.  It served as a reinforcement against stock failure in the extreme climates of India and places where they thought they would be fighting. It appears that this rifle may have first served “at home” and then been later exported to foreign climes as there are no RFI markings on it.

Measuring 44.3/4″ long. Barrel 25″ and trigger Pull 13.3/4″ to centre.   The outer LHS action wall is simply marked “No 4 Mk I.”  The LHS of the butt-socket is marked with an inverted ” broad arrow/ over-stamped A / M 1942 /  O 15365″  The rear of the bolt arm is stamped with a matching number but not the same font? No 2 bolt head fitted. Rectangular cocking piece.  Safety to rear LHS of action.  The rifle is equipped with the later pressed steel, Mk III rear sight and battle sight. Rear sight being graduated from 200 to 1300 yards. Grey metal butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment.

Front sight guarded with steel “ears.”  Muzzle has bayonet fixing lugs.  Two sling swivels.  Serrated trigger.  Loading bridge towards rear of action for clip loading.  Two grove bore in excellent condition with no pitting or misting.  Fine to excellent condition woodwork appearing unused.
