Two ex-target rifles back in Military Stocks

Two repurposed 7.62mm Parker-Hale type target rifles returned to their donor specifications but retaining their heavy target barrels.  The visible sections of the barrels have been turned down to accommodate the original fittings.

Both examples were built by Winchester, and sometimes known as the American Enfields.  These were extensively supplied to arm allied forces during the First World War, and further used by second echelon troops in World War Two.  Initially these weapons were thought to be over-heavy by the troops they were issued to but, their reputation for accuracy in the average Joe’s hands soon overcame the initial grumbles from the ranks.  After the conflicts and these sturdy Mauser action rifles were released from service and were often converted by companies like Parker-Hale, to produce highly accurate target rifles.  Their size and weight provided a stable platform for later conversions to sniper rifles, hence the choice for target rifles once out of service.

There were two main concepts for the heavy barrel target rifle. Firstly was the obviously “heavy barrel.” The second was the barrel had to be “free floating.” In re-fitting these weapons into their full length wood work, attention had to be paid to that feature; the original woodwork had to be further hollowed out to accommodate the heavy barrels.  Externally, the visible portion has been reduced in diameter to fit in the end band, however, under the woodwork, immediately adjacent to the reduced section, the barrel returns to its heavy configuration.  This wolf in sheep’s clothing looks just as any other Model 17 appears to casual inspection but adeptly hides its secret.

The balance of the rifles is exactly the same as the original issue.  Black American finger-grooved Walnut stocks show standard level of wear for a service life.  The metal work shows wear correct for the age of the weapons with a thinning of finish on the high edges.  Standard ladder rear sights within the guard over the rear of the action.  Bent bolt handles with matching numbers to each rifle.  Twin sling mounting points with swivels.  The front sight is within the ears which offer protection in use.  On one example there are some armourers marks which have been later struck out.  Good condition with good bores. Serial number is “W164300”
