Winchester P14 MkI* Rifle……………………….. (F1274)
Created on May 15th 2026
High grade example of the Winchester P14 Mk I* Rifle
Chambered in .303 with a five shot internal magazine and a Mauser type turn-bolt action. 46.1/4″ in overall length. The round blued barrel is a nominal 26″ long and the trigger Pull is 13.1/2″ to centre. This P 14 is in wonderful condition with a superb American Black Walnut stock and reproduction leather sling. Full military finger grooved stock and handguard with a fine patina all over. The stock unit ID disc has been removed and a long-grain wooden disc inserted. Having been through the “Weedon Repair Standard” (WRS) the long range dail sight and appeture have also been removed; only the dial remains – it may have been turned around as it does not show any graduations.
The serial number of the rifle is “W169908” and is found on the receiver. Also on the upper surface of the bolt arm. During 1916 to 1917 the Winchester factory alone produced 235,448 of these rifles. As is more common than not, the the receiver and bolt arm carry the obvious circled * of the WRS pattern conversion. One of the most important alterations that was included in the WRS was the lengthening of one of the front locking lugs on the bolt head- so making the action stronger. The receiver ring actually has two circled Star stamps and between them is another stamp reading; “PARKER-HALE / BIRMINGHAM.”
Behind the trigger guard are faint traces of acceptance stampings and crown marks. Otherwise the stock is very fine and it is possible that it was an armoury replacement as not marked withany other id. Smooth butt-plate with trap, twin swivels ,no stacking hook. Serrated trigger, bolt release and safety. The bolt is in good functioning order with a bright body, handle and shroud blued. Blueing all over is strong with little visible wear. Front sight protected by steel ears. The action outer wall is simply marked with the War Department “crows foot” and a Crowned/G.R. Crossed penants Proof mark (George V.) The rear sight ladder is graduated from 200 to 1600 yards and there is an aperture battle sight for closer distances. Bayonet lug attached to front band marked “W”. Parker-Hale swivel added to front stock screw for alternative sling mounting.
The bore on this rifle is in excellent condition with five grove LH twist 1:10 rifling. The crown of the barrel is marked; “AGP BALL BURNISHED.” This was a process designed to remove tool markings produced in the rifling of brand new barrels which ran across the direction of travel for the bullet. It increased the bore size by 1/1000th of an inch but increased accuracy immensely. This was only done to Winchester rifles. Winchester then redefined them as “Sniper Rifles,” take that from it what you will, but these are sought after barrels. Grooves are deep and there appears to be no pitting or scratching. A fine survivor from a distant time past and sturdy to-boot! A must for the military shooter or collector. CIP Nitro proofed September 2018
