EUROARMS M1861 Springfield Musket (f 893)

Created on August 11th 2020

A good well made reproduction of the Model 1861 Springfield Musket

A full sized three band percussion musket in .58 calibre and a section one firearm.  Perfect for the re-enactor or Black Powder enthusiast.  Faithful reproduction of the extensively issued Musket issued to most Infantry units during that long grim conflict.

Altogether in fantastic condition, not “mint” but just starting to show a mild tarnish to the bright finished steel work.  The bore looks unused.  If it was used, the shooter really knew how to maintain and clean the weapon because there is no sign of any corrosion, misting or other damage.  During the clean up this rifle received it was noted that the steel had attracted a coating of what has previously been identified as tobacco; from a smoky saloon perhaps!  It is possible it was a display piece hanging in a bar or restaurant.  The one piece walnut stock also shows no signs of dings dents or the common signs of usage.

The round bright barrel is 40″ long with a perfect three-grove bore.  Overall the musket is 56″ long.  The trigger pull length is 13.1/2″ to centre.  All fittings are in good order and the rifle comes with a  “WATERVILET ARSENAL”  leather sling.  It also has its full length ram-rod stored under the barrel.  The two position action is good and holds well when cocked.  Typical heavy Springfield hammer with chequered hammer spur.

As with the original weapons the lock is engraved with the rampant American Eagle clutching a broken branch?  Not the original US Eagle.  The lock also has the armoury name “SPRINGFIELD” horizontally alongside the Eagle. Behind the hammer the date “1861” is clearly marked.   The barrel shows the original “V P Eagles Head Firing proofs”.  Over the breech the date is repeated.  The barrel is also marked “EUROARMS OF AMERICA” along the LHS.   The serial number is marked on the LHS of the barrel at the back.  As original model, staggered lift-up, rear leaf sights with inverted “V” on a block as front sight. Showing modern Italian proof marks for Black Powder.  The top tang of the curved steel butt-plate is clearly marked “U.S.”

This rifle would be perfect for the enthusiastic Black powder shooter or US Army Federal Soldier re-enactor.
