K98 with High Turret mounted Kahles Scope……….. (F 970)

Created on November 1st 2021

Assembled High Turret example of a Scoped K98

Standard K98 with High Turret Scope set up (as assembled)  Serial number on rifle mostly obscured as front turret fixed over markings.  However, judging from other markings which are visible over the balance of the rifle it looks like the serial number is “6495p”  Unfortunately the bolt is mismatched as with most surrendered rifles.  The number on the bolt (all parts) is “1203”  Chambered in 7.92 x 57mm. Having a 5-shot Mauser bolt action with internal magazine.  The bolt has the bent bolt handle and Mauser flag safety system.  The bolt handle and the flag safety both clear the eye piece at the rear of the scope.

Standard dimensions to the rifle of 43.1/2″ long.  The round blued barrel is a nominal 24″ long. The trigger Pull is 13″ to centre.  The scope is a fixed magnification “Kahles” 4 x 60.  Mounted on high turret mounts.  Windage is mechanically adjustable through the rear mount and elevation by an unmarked turret on top of the scope body.  Standard post and rail reticule optics good.  The scope is 10.3/4″ long.  The mounts are reproduction “see-thru” mounts which enable viewing through hollow centres.

Bluing is generally good over the whole of the weapon showing wear which fits its age.  The stock is a laminated late war version in good used condition.  It has the bolt diss-assembly disc mounted through the butt and the side mounting slot for the leather sling.  This couples with the side bar on the mid band.  Further research may elude to the date and manufacturer of this particular K, as it has one distinctive feature which my be attributable to a particular maker; whilst all the other stock fittings on the rifle are milled steel items with the cupped steel butt-plate, the front band is pressed yet numbered to the rifle.  It’s worth investigating.

Bayonet fitting to front but cleaning rod is absent.  Trigger guard and magazine floor plate are steel milled pieces (numbered to the rifle) with locking screws to the main screws.  None of the screws carry numbers.  The rear sights are correctly numbered to the rifle.  These are graduated from 100 to 2000 meters.  The sidewall of the action is marked simply “Mod.98”  Bolt release catch to rear LHS of action.  Mauser three position safety to rear of bolt.

Externally the laminated stock is devoid of Wehrmacht stampings but there is a single, unreadable mark within the recess for the strap.  Waffenamts on various components of the bolt and others observed on the sight collar and receiver.  The rifle scope comes with loose leather scope caps joined by a strap.  Also with the rifle is a tan leather scope case which does take the scope when detached.  It has a clear makers logo and its own strap. Hooded front sight.

This is not a bad representation of the High turret scope mounted K98 rifle.  The optics are reasonably clear and the rifle is proofed and ready to use.  Action fine.  The rifling is strong and deep.  Not interrupted and devoid of actual pitting although a little dark.  It could benefit from use and cleaning.
