Excellent Marlin 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine
Superb Marlin 1894 SRC with tang aperture sight in .38-40 calibre. Cosmetic condition of this carbine is unusually high. Case-coloured components are still vibrant with colour, the barrel an tube may have been refinished but the craftsman who carried out the work has managed to complete a sympathetic restoration. The blueing concerned even has a hint of the plumb-brown about it and is not too strong in its blackness. The only real indicator to the refinish is a softness to the lower line of patent dates which are just not quite as deep as they should be.
Overall length of the carbine is 37″. The round barrel is 20″ and the trigger pull is 13″ to centre. Carbine butt and butt-plate, stock in extra fine condition but slightly opening about the tangs. Aperture sight covers any model designation. Flat-topped action with side ejection from bolt. The only marking on the action is the serial number which is “299603” which indicates production in 1904. Side loading port shows little wear and a strong black. The breech end of the barrel is marked with the calibre designation; .”38-40″. The rear sight position is blanked off by a plain dovetail wedge. Front sight small brass blade pinned into block.
Barrel markings on top of round barrel read;-” MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. , NEW HAVEN,CT. U.S.A. / PAT’D OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889. AUG 1. 1893.” On the LHS of the action is an original saddle ring mounted on a loop. The main aspect which shines out when meeting this carbine for the first time is the fine case-colour hardening of the action, bolt, lever, hammer and trigger. Then the pleasing colour of the barrel and lastly the fine condition of the stocks. Action is mechanically fine, bore has some wear, it that is not surprising if you consider the rifles actual age. Six grove rifling is complete but slightly aged. There is no pitting but just the slightest ageing.
It is very rare to find such a carbine in such wonderful condition, this would easily take a premier position in most rifle collections. Nitro proofed in 2013
