Created on November 17th 2023

A Vey Usable example of the Winchester 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine

Of standard Winchester specification for a S.R. Carbine in the 92 model.  Chambered in one of Winchesters best sellers .44-40 WCF.  The full length tubular magazine under the barrel will hold 11 rounds.  Overall the Carbine measure 37.1/2″ in length.  It is fitted with the standard round profile 20″ barrel.  The trigger Pull is 12.7/8″ to centre.  Bore is excellent with strong rifling and no misting or pitting.  Action smooth and reliable as ever.

This carbine carries the serial number “791949” which according to the Winchester Arms Museum letter included in the sale was applied on June the 9th 1915.  As mentioned above in standard specification with a forged saddle ring attached to the LHS of the action.  The ring has produced a splendid “ghost ring” on the action wall from rubbing over the years. Stocked in the normal musket-type butt stock and carbine fore-end.  The butt-plate is once again the musket type and the fore-end retained with one barrel band.

The marking on the upper tang read as follows; “MODEL 1892 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF.”  This is the correct layout for the serial number range.  This is all covered with an unmarked contemporary to the time adjustable Lyman-type tang sight.  The action and underlever have lost their original bluing and now show strong silver brown patina. The “WCP” internal proof marking is just visible due to wear on the crest of the receiver ring.  The barrel and magazine tube look to have been refinished s a strong deep black with feint markings.  Full makers name and address in two ling marking on left upper radius of barrel.  Hammer spur with knurled surface to aide grip.  Rear sights open V with flip up ladder graduated from 200 to 900 yards.

Stocked in the usual carbine hardwood with a light-ish hue to its colour and finished over with a shine to the surface.   Small brass escutcheon with script initials engraved.  Blade on block steel front sight, blued barrel band in front of sight block.  Multiple proofs applied including Nitro.  A very practical and usable rifle for the shooter who wants to use the real thing on the range.  Comes with a purpose made leather gun-slip in fine condition and the Winchester Arms Museum letter.
