Winchester 1892 Lever Action Rifle in .44-40

Superb and original Winchester 92 in 44 WCF (.44-40) Lever action rifle with tubular magazine under barrel which will hold 13 cartridges.  This rifle was ordered for the British market as it has the shotgun style butt and early British London proof marks.  The rifle is stocked in the standard high quality American Black walnut.  Overall the rifle is 41.1/2″ long.  The barrel is a standard round 24″ and the Pull length is 13″ to centre.

This model 92′ has been fitted with a rear tang sight which covers the original markings.  On strip-down for cleaning the markings have been photographed and bare the standard makers name and model designation plus patent dates.  Winchester “WP” factory proof marks on barrel and receiver.  The older London proofs are on the rear of the sliding bolt assembly, the side of the receiver and the barrel.  The underside of the receiver has the serial number “606994”  Number indicates production in 1911.  This happens to tie in with the older London proof mark.

Loading port on RHS of action with good blue. Knurled hammer spur and steel checkered steel butt-plate.  Overall finish is generally disappearing from the metalwork however the barrel and tube have the higher proportion still remaining.  Otherwise plum-browns are taking over with strong high edge wear.  All of this wear is right with a rifle of these advancing years.  Nothing seems extraordinary or out of place.  The stock are in good condition with two iron sling swivel loops in place.  The normal smattering of light dents and dings with a pleasing patina cover the surfaces of the woodwork.  However it appears that someone ( and by family tradition it is allegedly the number of deer accounted for ) has been recording “hits” with notches along the underside of the wrist in woodwork.  There are twenty-four marks !

Halfway along the top quarter of the barrel is the following roll stamping: – “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / – NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT.14 1884- ”  This is the correct stamping for serial numbers above 500,000.  Firm action mechanically fine.  The six grove rifling is complete from breech to muzzle but there is pitting as would be expected on the leeward side of the lands.  None of it however interrupts the rifling pattern.

A good, honest, famous Winchester lever-action in fine condition and an essential part of most weapons collections.  Freshly CIP nitro-proofed Jan 2022.
