SMLE .22 Rifle by Ishapore
A very good looking .22 rifle made from a converted ,303 Ishapore (Indian) Bolt Action SMLE. Overall length 44.1/2″. Round blued heavy barrel approx’ 25″. Trigger Pull 13.1/4″ to center. Stocked in new replacement woodwork with a solid brass Butt-plate. Vacant brass ID disc in RHS of butt. Serial number 10109 on RHS of receiver. Adjacent to opposing arrows sold out of service mark.
The RHS of the wrist socket outer is marked as follows; ” Royal cyper Crown / G.R.I. / ISHAPORE / 1910 / SHT. LE. / III” Safety catch on the other side clearly marked “III” (Non functioning) The bolt has the older “D” shaped cocking piece. Early rear sight protection ears with WD arrows. The rear sight matches in serial number but the upper face is bare and just has .22 ranges upon it; “25, 50, 100”
The front sight is protected in the usual way with pinched steel protection ears. The bayonet stud of the nose-cap shows a matching number. Off center two part firing pin arrangement. .22 marked bolt head also marked “N.S.” Magazine cutt-off is only for effect – non functioning. The magazine has been altered to help with loading; the plate within having a centrally placed furrow to aid with loading but also an opening to the rear to allow empties to fall into.
The barrel is a new anshutz item and consequently more heavy than normal, aiding steadyness in the aim. However, the rifle is now at about 10.1/2 pounds in weight. Bore is excellent. Mechanically fine, and freshly proofed. Finish over the steel components is mixed showing heavy to mild wear but the thing is 115 years old !! A good new leather strap comes with the rifle.
