A highly rare and important training rifle used by the infamous S.A.

Pre-War German Training Rifle – A Rare Relic of Tumultuous Times
This remarkable pre-war German training rifle is steeped in history and bears the unmistakable ownership mark of the S.A. (Sturmabteilung) — the notorious “Storm Division”, Hitler’s early paramilitary force.
Before World War II, the S.A. served as the bodyguards and rally enforcers for the Nazi Party, instantly recognisable in their brown shirts and swastika armbands. Though they were later overshadowed by the rise of the S.S., the S.A. played a pivotal role in shaping the early years of the regime.
This rifle stands as a powerful historical artifact, a tangible reminder of a dark and defining chapter in world history. Its markings connect it directly to one of the most infamous organisations of the era — a chilling yet essential piece of remembrance that underscores why history must never be forgotten or repeated.
For the serious collector, this is more than just a firearm — it’s a conversation piece, a study piece, and a witness to history itself.

Condition & Construction
This rifle is presented in absolutely original, untouched condition — a true survivor from its era. Every component is matching and authentic, showing a consistent and honest patina with uniform surface wear that speaks to its age and authenticity rather than restoration.
In both build quality and handling, it evokes the classic Gewehr 98, reflecting the same meticulous German craftsmanship. The stock is crafted from fine European walnut, showcasing beautiful natural grain and depth of colour.
The finish across the stock and handguard retains a semi-matt sheen, with just a touch more polish in the areas most often handled — a subtle testament to its service and history.
An exceptional and completely original example for the discerning collector — unspoiled, full of character, and rich with period authenticity.

Specifications & Features
This exceptional pre-war German training rifle measures 43⅝” in overall length, with a 27″ round barrel and a 13″ length of pull to center. When first brought into service, all metal components were expertly blued, though time and honest use have now softened that finish — particularly across the receiver bridge and butt-plate, where wear tells the story of its handling and service life.
The butt-plate, fashioned from a notably thick piece of steel, remains sturdy and has done its job admirably in protecting the walnut stock. It is complemented by a curved steel trigger guard, two barrel bands, and a false cleaning rod, all consistent with rifles of this class and era.
The stock and handguard are in fine, original condition, showing no signs of repair, and finished in the same semi-matt tone characteristic of early German manufacture. The butt configuration mirrors that of larger service rifles, featuring a side-mounted leather sling arrangement — a classic design detail from the period.
Most significant of all is the stock cartouche, proudly displaying the stamp of the S.A. Nordmark Group. At its center are the finely worked “S.A.” initials, encircled by the inscription:
“S.A. d. N.S.D.A.P. / Gr. Nordmark.”
This marking stands as irrefutable proof of its origin and issue, connecting the rifle directly to the pre-war Sturmabteilung — making it not only a striking collectible but a historically significant artifact from a turbulent era in world history.

Action, Sights & Markings
A classic Mauser-type bolt action built for single-shot service — there’s no magazine fitted, just a solid base for single-load operation. The bolt is simple and robust, with a curved arm and an easy-to-use flag safety. Sighting is handled by standard K98 style rear sights, clearly graduated 20–200 metres for practical training use. The bolt release sits in the usual place — side-mounted to the rear LHS of the action.
What really sets this example apart is its factory and commercial stamping — excellent provenance evidence that will interest serious collectors. The receiver bridge is crisply marked in superb gothic script:
“Mod. W625 C” set over a roundel bearing “BERLIN SULER WAFFEN UND FAHRZEUGWERKE” encircling “BSW / Suhl.” Commercial BUG proof marks appear on the RHS of the receiver and are mirrored forward on the barrel, consistent and clearly struck.
Additional identifiers include a repeated number “3618” on the LHS of the open bolt guide and again beneath the stock just behind the first barrel band — a detail that strengthens traceability. Lifting the bolt reveals the last three digits of the serial on the bolt stub (“609”), while the top side of the bolt stub carries further proof marks.
Altogether, these features provide tangible documentary evidence of origin and use, making this rifle not only a mechanically faithful period example but a highly desirable, well-documented piece for the discerning collector.

Mechanical & Shooting Condition
Mechanically the action is sound and fully functioning — the bolt cycles and ejects correctly. The bore is four-groove RH twist rifling; it displays some pitting and light fouling but remains serviceable. In function-testing the rifle grouped ten rounds touching at 25 yards, demonstrating that despite cosmetic bore issues it retains practical accuracy for its class.
Summary
A superbly documented, untouched example — equal parts historic relic and collectible firearm. Its combination of original finish, factory and commercial stamps, and the rare S.A. Nordmark cartouche make this a standout acquisition for the serious collector or museum.

An extraordinary and sobering artifact from a fraught chapter of the 20th century — an opportunity to own a rifle that witnessed history firsthand. This is an item for the discerning collector or institution that understands the weight of provenance and the importance of remembering the past so it never repeats.
