Swedish Mauser M96 by Carl Gustafs

The normal high standards apply to this rifle as they do to all Swedish produced Mausers by the Carl Gustafs plant.  Although a real classic of advanced years, as usual build quality is excellent and condition, therefore performance is going to be second to none.  I am constantly amazed by tales of daring-do as customers report back to me with their results.  1000 and 1100 meter accuracy for a 6.5mm at Bisley is not unheard of with a 118 year old rifle!  And with all respect, the shooters are no spring chickens either !

Accurate, Sleek, Slender and beautifully put together.  Almost over-engineered.  Chambered in 6.5 x 55 Swedish.  5-round internal staggered magazine with Mauser straight arm bolt and three position flag safety.  Straight grip one-piece beech stock with hand-guard over the barrel to protect the rear sight.  Built by the Swedish manufacturer Carl Gustfas.

This M96 infantry rifle measures 49.1/2″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is approximately 29.1/4″ long with a stepped muzzle to accept a bayonet.  Bayonet lug on underside of nose-band.  The trigger pull is 14″ to centre.  The main receiver ring is marked as follows; “Swedish crown over CG logo / CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI. / 1902.”  The serial number is marked on the outside of the action wall; “100993” and the factory inspectors initials “O.G.” Olof Gibson  was in that post from 1898 to 1902 which fits with the date on the receiver. However it is interesting to see that Gibson left that roll at the end of March 1902 so this rifle had to be finished within the first three months of that year. It is often difficult to pin down so accurately the exact time period with a military rifle, but not in this case.

The superbly engineered bolt and magazine follower are polished and finished in the white.  They would have provided a handsome contrast to the blued receiver and balance of the rifle but the blues are starting to fade to a grey with high edge wear.  The stock is European Walnut with a bore condition disc mounted on the RHS of the butt.  The rifle is matching in that is carries the last three digits of the serial number on all the relevant parts including all the bolt parts.  The last three digits of the serial number appear on all the components of the rear sight, the bolt release catch, the steel butt-plate and all other relevant components.  Swedish crown inspectors marks on many parts.  The “Ch/ Crown” stock inspectors marks appear behind the trigger guard on the underside of the wrist.

Two sling swivels and full length cleaning rod under barrel.  Stepped rear sight graduated from 300 to 600 meters in the down position and 700 to 2000 meters in the upright position.  Simple blade from sight adjustable through dove-tail on block.  Strong rifling super smooth action.
