Superb K31 Schmidt-Rubin (Karabiner)

A very fine example of the Swiss K31 in almost mint condition.  This rifle was the last of the Schmidt-Rubin line and though not strictly all Schmidt-Rubin; as a redesign was developed by a Major Furrer.  The perfected design finally going into production in 1933.  The main alteration was the overall length of the bolt which allowed for a shorter receiver and a repositioning of the magazine adjacent to the trigger guard.  However, the barrel was actually just a fraction longer than its predecessor the K1911 even though the overall length of the rifle was shorter.

The K31 is chambered in 7.5mm x 55.  It has a six shot detachable box magazine and its famous straight pull mechanism.  The redesign mentioned above moved the bolts locking lugs forward but still allowed the collar or shroud to rotate during cycling.  This sped up cycling time as the stroke was also shorter – heavier rate of fire.  None of this detracted from the rifles inherent accuracy which these rifles are known for – it improved it.  The shorter bolt had removed any “rock” acting upon the round in the chamber which only made things better.

This K31 carries the serial number 817409 which according to records puts production in 1944.  All parts match including barrel, bolt, magazine and woodwork – everything is original.  The bolt has the aluminium bolt handle which was also part of the redesign, as the Bakelite red type were prone to damage.  The stock is in almost mint condition, as it has been stripped and refinished to a high standard.  Interestingly this weapon sustained some considerable damage to the LHS of the pistol grip.  It has obviously been back to armoury or even Eidgenossische Waffenfabrik in Bern where it was originally produced and has undergone a highly skilled repair.  The infill of matched timber is perfect, as is the flush finish.  This has been completed by a master craftsman.  It is not possible to feel the joints edges with touch.  Swiss shield cartouche in centre of butt on RHS.  Main Swiss shield on crest of receiver very clear.  Adjustable front sight protected by steel ears.  Bayonet fitting under front band, also fitted with steel stacking hook.  Round cocking piece to rear of bolt.

This Karabiner has its rifle owners tag under the steel butt plate, see photo. It reads; “26  Ruf – Fritz / Oberwiler str. 6 / 4142 Munchenstien  BL”   This was in case Fritz left the rifle anywhere, like on a tram – it could be handed in to the local police station and then returned to him. A very simple way of returning lost property without all the fuss!  Very often these tags have been lost, but we know this is correct for this rifle as it has the correct serial number on the reverse and is made out of the correct material – a kind of waterproof card which takes a simple lead pencil very well.  Also, the script text is very much of its time.  The address still exists, and the house stands.

Not only is condition of this rifle as good as described but, the bore is also in excellent shape – looking perfect to the naked eye.  No pitting or misting. Rifling is strong and complete.  Sights are the correct original fitment to the rifle and function perfectly.  This rifle is in perfect condition really for a weapon that was made in the war years and to survive for 78 years in this incredible condition is testament to the care and respect afforded it by its various keepers and the original quality, care and attention put into its build and finish.  By Sword & Musket has carefully refreshed and strip cleaned it, to reoffer it almost in its original condition.  Freshly CIP proofed 2022.  Also fitted with superb brown leather sling with makers mark and Swiss acceptance stamp.

Don’t miss this chance – they are becoming more and more difficult to obtain in this condition.
