Good example of a Heavy Gem .25 Air Rifle

In good condition an example of the “Heavy Gem” .25 air rifle made in Germany from the mid 1880’s until 1900.  This particular example is in the rare to find .25 calibre.  It has a fine condition smooth bore and a heavy “Schutzen” style metal butt plate.

Overall, the rifle measures approximately 39.3/4″ in length.  It has a two stage part octagonal  21.1/4″ long barrel.  On the top flat of the barrel is the word “PATENT” and the logo of two crossed pistols.  The trigger pull is 14″ to centre.  Designed as a break barrel rifle, the barrel is opened by depressing a tipping catch which releases the barrel and allows one to compress the spring.  The spring will catch and a pellet can be loaded.  Whilst the barrel is open the digits “2310” are seen on the barrel side of the hinge “1 0” is repeated on the barrel side.

The opening catch also doubles as the rear sight.  The action functions mechanically but the results are not overly impressive as far as power goes.  The steel work over the majority of the weapon is evenly covered with mild pitting from corrosion and there is no colour left to speak of.  However the effect is even all over with no part any worse than any other.

A rare and classical air rifle from the early days of serious production.  This was a trail blazer in the distribution of air rifles to the public and was around for some time before other manufacturers really became serious about producing any competition.
