Civilian Flintlock Smoothbore

Created on November 8th 2022

London built Smoothbore Fusil or Fowler

A handsome long smoothbore weapon, possibly an Officers Fusile; measuring a total of 52.1/2″ in length.  The barrel is part octagon part round and measures 36.1/2″ long.  The pull length is 13.3/4″ to centre. Military style fore sight block on muzzle.  Bore measures 0.67″ at muzzle. Some old repairs and losses to top edge of fore-end.

Military style single piece stock with straight wrist made from a dark straight grained English Walnut.  Superb time built smooth dark polished patina to its surface.  Brass acorn shaped trigger guard and brass fluted cleaning rod holders under fore-end.  Rear sling mount on front of trigger guard. Full length steel cleaning and loading rod stored under.  Brass tipped fore-end.  No loose fittings.  Brass lock retention plate on obverse shows a stand of arms.  –  A hint to its origins!  Vacant oval brass escutcheon on top of wrist.  Brass butt-plate with long upper tang, showing another stand of arms.

Steel border engraved banana shaped lock with step to rear.  Makers name unfortunately disrupted with corrosion;- all that shows is ” K_ _ _ _ _ D / Co.”  Could be Ketland & Co?  On the top flat of the hexagonal rear half of the barrel is the name “LONDON.”  On the LHS are two civilain early London proof marks;-  Crown over crossed keys.  Swan necked steel cocking piece with a flint in position – functional.  Steel sprung frizzen. Lock functions enough to spark but suspected third position does not hold.

The perfect wall hanger to take pride of place above your fireplace.
