Genuine WW2 Remington 1903A4 .30-06 Sniper Rifle

s/n 4997333  .30-06 cal, 24″ round barrel with a mixture of blued and parkerized parts.  This mixture may seem strange but this infact indicates that the rifle is more original than an all over parkerized piece.  The rifle at first went into service with this “mixture” of finishes and was not until later, when overhauled that they ended up being parkerized all over.

This nice example was manufactured by Remington in the “3rd block” of serial numbers and approximately 7600 were produced. The parkerized receiver is marked correctly with “U.S.REMINGTON MODEL 03A3” on the left and then on the right below the forward scope mount “4997333”. The barrel is marked “R.A. over Ordenance Bomb over 1-44”. This muzzle area shows some wear of the parkerizing indicating use in the field.

The rest of the rifle has the typical stamped components including enlarged trigger guard ( possibly a hint at the theatre in which it served ) and the correctly scalloped bolt to clear the M84 scope eye-piece. The bolt shows “R”  Remington inspection stamps as do many other parts. Noticably, the bolt is in the original “blued” finish as is the magazine cutt-off switch and chequered butt plate.

The stock is the correct pistol grip model that is marked with a single circled “P” proof mark in the pistol grip area and a second boxed “P” directly behind that. There are a good selection of sub-inspectors marks infront of the magazine floor plate on the underside of the stock. The right side of the wrist is stamped with a “RRA-C” proof.

It is correctly fitted with the U.S. Army Model M84 Sniper scope with hinged covers over adjustment knobs and the correct rubber eye -piece. The scope is marked on the identification plate with “TELESCOPE / M84 / SERIAL NO.14650”. The optics are good and clear with no frosting and the reticule intact.

The rifles bore is good clean and sharp. The action fine. It has been sympathetically London proofed and would make a fine addition to any specialist collection. A rare beast in the UK. the overall condition give a strong impression that the rifle probably saw action in one of the later conflicts if not the end of WW2.
