A Fine Original Remington 1903-A4 US Army Sniper Rifle

Remi A4 001

This excellent Springfield 1903-A4 bolt action sniper rifle by Remington is presented in original form with the later war -fit M84 telescopic sight mounted on an unmarked “Redfield” base and rings.  The rifle is completely finished in the standard light grey parkerised protective coating, typical of the period.  Mounted in a c-type pistol grip stock it internally stacks five .30-06 cartridges.    The serial number, roll stamped on the receiver in correctly small numerals is ” 3243703″ for October 1943 (estimated)  This is an interesting point and illustrates the known problems that the sniper production run often suffered.  Mainly due to supply of scopes from the various makers, production was often halted until the scopes caught up, or visa-versa and the barrel and scope would then be mated with receivers made earlier.  Hence on examining the barrel dates we find on this example, April 1944.  So this actual rifle was held-up in production  from October 1943 until April of the following year.  The model designation and maker are roll stamped into the obverse of the receiver and read; ” U.S. / REMINGTON / MODEL O3 -A3″ Although know as the “A4” this was never actually marked on any of the rifles.

All the stock fitting components are the correct stamped steel types marked with the “R” Remington mark.  This rifle has its original barrel which has never been fitted with a front sight assembly, as it is smoothly finished all over with the grey parkerising.  The action and the bore are both in fine condition the bolt having the correctly “scalloped” handle which is very difficult to falsify.  It is scooped out quite considerably to avoid the rubber eye shade over the eye-piece.  The scope is blued and all the markings picked out in white paint.  There is an ID plate fixed to the side of the scop, once again picked out in white which reads; “TELESCOPE / M84 /  SERIAL No 29641”  The windage and elevation adjustment dials are protected under hinged covers which by the force of a light spring will snap back into place as they are closed.

The american black walnut stock is in almost unmarked condition. These stocks are recognised as war time replacements.  Due to the fact that they were usually replaced in the field no cartouches or final proof marks will be found on them.  The depth of the holes for the cross bolts shows the incredible lack of use this stock has been put through. It bears none of the usual unpleasant gouges or dinks associated with normal service wear and due to the nature of the extremely close grain around the pistol grip, in particular, shows a fine shine to the finish.  The stock is fitted with the usual two sling mounts and a further open mount underneath the nose band.  The front band has the bayonet lug on the underside, as is the norm. On the underside of  the exposed portion of the barrel, near the muzzle is a clean “P” marking – Remington’s firing proof mark.

The magazine floor late and trigger guard are the same pressed construction and the butt-plate has a trap in its centre which stows the cleaning equipment for the rifle.   This is fine head turning example of a rifle that saw production in quite high numbers but are very difficult to source this side of the pond.  This is a chance to acquire a rare investment piece which will cause a stir on the firing point and also be a fine addition to any military scoped rifle collection.  The bore is excellent and cosmetically it is almost too good !
