Springfield 1903 Inter-war years…………………SOLD

Created on April 7th 2011

A very clean  and original example of a between Wars 1903 with pistol grip stock.

Serial number 1523170 for 1938 which matches with the barrel date of  9 – 38, this indicates that the barrel and action on this example have stayed together since they were originally made – a major plus point in collecting terms.

Full length American Walnut stock with distinctive pistol grip in fine condition.  On the front of the pistol grip is the circled “P” final proof mark.   This type of stock was favoured by the US Marine Corps on which they built their famous sniper rigs with the long Unertl x 8  scope. The LHS of the wrist is marked with the Springfield inspectors cartouche “SA over SPG” (Boxed)  The stock and handguard rate excellent.  Twin bolt stock.  Checkered steel Springfield butt plate with trap.

The mauser action still wears its original finish, as does all the rest of the metal components. Flag safety at rear and magazine cut-off and bolt release fully operational. “N.S.” stamped into top of bolt arm (Nickle Steel).   A strong grey/brown patina with only high edge wear and a few minor scratches.  Breech marked “U.S.  /  SPRINGFIELD  /  ARMORY  / MODEL 1903  /  1523170 ”  Graduated rear sights marked up to  2850 yards with the multiple aiming positions for different ranges, with windage adjustment.  Magazine floor plate and trigger guard and nose cap and bayonet fittting are also a nice grey/green patina.

Barrel marked behind the foresight  “S. A. / Flaming bomb / 9-38”.  Beautiful clean bore, no pitting or corrosion and good rifling.  Two sling swivles and stacking swivle with correct milled center band and fore end cap with bayonet fitting.

This rifle although showing signs of use, is well preserved and in fine condition and would do any good collection credit.

£1695.
