US WW2 Remington M1903-A4 Sniper Rifle……..SOLD

Created on September 1st 2008

An excellent example of a 1903 Remington Sniper Rifle.

Serial number, 3425954, .30-06 cal, 24″ barrel with parkerized finish and walnut stock. This is a 1903-A4 sniper rifle which has been overhauled at the Rock Island Arsenal and is fitted with the M84 scope, which has a post and crosswire reticule. The scope itself still has its rubber eyepiece and sliding sunshade. The barrel, receiver, bolt, barrel bands, buttplate and scope base are parkerized. The scope rings are blue as is the actual scope. The “scant” stock is oiled finished.

In the image above one can see the correct distinctive bolt with milled clearance cut out on the handle, only ever found on the genuine sniper rifles; with the relief cut in the stock aswell. Correctly the barrel is not fitted with or ever has been with a front sight base or blade. The receiver has the correct markings seperated to enable clear reading of the serial number with the “Redfield” sight base in position, reading: “US/REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3” on the left and the serial number “3415607” on the right.

There is a data plate in the side of the scope which is marked “TELESCOPIC/M84/SERIAL No.37277”. The barrel is stamped “RA/Ordanance bomb/3-44” behind the front sight.  A “P” is stamped on the underside of the barrel. There are the Remington “R” markings on the bolt, trigger guard, cut-off lever and buttplate. The stock has a single circled gothic “P” on the inside of the pistol grip.

A boxed “RIA/FK” inspection mark is stamped infront of the magazine cut-off recess and a boxed “RIA/EB” overhaul inspection mark is stamped in the middle of the stock on the left hand side. This signifies the rifle was overhauled and proofed at the Rock Island Arsenal and then reinspected at the RIA. The rifle is supplied with a post-war M1 green webbing sling.

This weapon appears to be mint condition having not been used after the RIA overhaul. 99% of all the finish remains on all the components, wood or steel. All markings are crisp. The bore is extremely good, clear and sharp and the action is excellent. The optics in the scope are clear and the reticul crisp with no indication of any form of disruption to the inside of the scope. In the United Kingdom this is a rare animal and would be a major focus to any serious collection.
