A good WWII A3 U.S. Smith-Corona

Serial Number 3652111 for March 1943 by records released.  .30-06 caliber, 5 shot internal magazine ith Mauser action.   Overall length 43.1/2″.  Barrel length 23.3/4″.

The breech marked as follows:  “U.S. / SMITH-CORONA / MODEL O3-A3 / 3652111”   The breech finished in typical green-grey parkerizing as with the barrel.  The barrel marked behind the fore-sight with “S.C. / flaming bomb / 3-43”  This date obviously marries up with the serial number information meaning the barrel is original to the rifle.  This is even more surprising when you see the condition of the bore which is excellent.  It is a four groove bore in immaculate condition.

The stock is the usual slightly rougher Smith-Corona type where less time was allotted to finishing.  It displays the normal dents and dings from light usage but bears no serious damage of any sort.  There are the normal cartouches expected on the military model.  The factory inspectors marks are in front of the pressed steel, blued trigger guard.  The presence of the mixed finish on parts is normal after a re-fit and this weapon shows the boxed “O.G.” cartouche on the butt, of the Ogden Arsenal which is where re-fits were carried out.

The wrist shows the clear boxed “FJA” and crossed cannons cartouches. The final inspection circled “P” behind the trigger guard underneath is also clear.  There is a clear capital “P” underneath the barrel at the muzzle end which is another final firing proof mark applied at Smith-Corona.  This A3 is fitted with all the correct pressed steel parts like the barrel bands, sling swivels and Smith-Corona trigger guard and floor plate.  It also has the correct chequered steel butt plate manufactured by Smith-Corona, with trap for cleaning.  Standard ramp aperture battle sight graduated to 800 yards with windage adjustment.  A good World War Two U.S. Service rifle in excellent shooting condition.

 (under offer at) £1000.
