WW2 U.S.1903 by Remington………….SOLD

Created on April 9th 2011

The Classic 1903 US Service Rifle built by Remington

Of Standard specification these 1903s were built by Remington in this form until March 1943. It is almost impossible to tell the difference between these and the Springfield produced models unless one can closely inspect.  The most noticeable differences being the breech markings and the barrel marking.

The breech is marked “U.S. / REMINGTON / MODEL 1903  /  3099520”  This serial number is recorded as being produced in May 1942.  The barrel markings behind the sight read “R.A. / flaming bomb /  4 – 42”  – a very close match.

The majority of the rifle being in a blued finish with only the bolt shroud and action body parkerised.  The sight collar mount is without the lightening cuts.  The sights are the regular leaf type graduated up to 2850 yds with the standard 5 aiming points and windage adjustment.  Plain blade front sight.

Straight grip stock in American Walnut with no grasping groves. Regular hump hand guard. On the LHS of the wrist are the “boxed” inspectors marks “FJA” of Lt Frank J Attwood and the “crossed cannons” of the ordenance department.  Underneath is the final proof mark a circled “P” as under the front exposed part of the barrel – another capital “P”  Factory sub-inspectors marks are forward of the magazine floor plate

Chequered steel butt plate with trap.  Two sling swivles with milled band and front stacking hook.  Forend cap and bayonet fitting.  Grey green (typical of Remington) magazine floor plate and trigger guard.  The stock wears the usual dents and scratches but has no splits or shakes and is in generally very good condition, as is the “humped” handguard.

No signs of refinishing by armourer of amature.  A good example of one of the last 1903s produced before the war expedient of the A3 turned up.  Very good bore and smooth Mauser action.  Mainly “blued” Mauser bolt maked under bolt arm with “R” as many other components. Flag safety with bolt release and magazine cut-of to rear side of action.

To the collectors this rifle is usually indentified as the Remington 1903 “Modified”.  A fine weapon with a definate place in the developement of the 1903 service arm.

£1250.
