An 1895 Winchester Lever-Action Box Magazine Rifle.

Serial number 405799 for 1903 marked on the lower tang.  .30-06 gov’t  calibre.  Five shot, fixed box magazine Rifle.  Overall length 42.3/4″ overall length.  Round blued barrel 24″.

Two piece American black walnut stock with blued crescent moon butt-plate, the later being strong in colour.

The overall impression this rifle gives you the moment you pick it up is of a compact heavy-hitter. – In very good condition.  The rifle has a short barrel compared to other 1895s.  Condition is excellent for its age.  The stocks are in fine condition with minimal dents, the finish on the metal work is excellent.  Simple buck-horn rear sights with a beaded blade front sight.  The lever is jointed and has the facility to open further for a gloved hand if necessary.

The upper rear tang is clearly marked;  “MODEL 1895  / WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PATT. OFF & FGN”  The breech is engraved with a pattern to reduce glare and is marked with the Winchester factory proof mark in an oval.  As is the top of the barrel just in front of the action.  The stepped action is marked on the sidewall with the full Winchester manufacturers address and the second line with the patents.  The barrel is marked on the left of the sights as follows; ” -NICKEL STEEL BARREL- / -ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS STEEL –  .30 GOV’ T 06″.

The action is smooth, the bore is mint.  All over, a well presented not often encountered rifle.  A must have for a serious Winchester man.
