REMINGTON Model 12-C ……SOLD

Created on December 6th 2011

A Good Remington 12-C Pump-action .22 Rifle

40.3/4″ Overall length.  Serial number 438628.  Barrel length 24″.

These effective little pumps were manufactured by Remington between 1909 and 1936.

A pistol grip Walnut Stock with crescent moon butt plate and a ribbed sliding fore end.  The fore end has ten parrallel groves runing in it from side to side.  The stocks are in very good order with a pleasant matching dark colour and patina.  There are no splits, shakes or cracks.

The rifle is equiped with an octagonal barrel with tube magazine under.  The tube magazine is loaded by releasing the sprung clip at the front end and pulling the brass loading tube (follower) out partially to leave the loading slot underneath open,  then inserting the shells, nose forward into the tube untill full.  The follower is then pushed back in, the spring taking up the pressure to push the rounds into the action as required.

The action is positive and works well.  There is a knurled take-down screw on the LHS of the action to enable the stripping of the weapon for cleaning.  Once released the action body will lift away from the trigger cluster allowing access.  Behind the steeel trigger guard is a push button safety which functions correctly.  In front of the trigger guard the serial number is stamped into the underside of the action along with inspectors initials “R.W.”  On the lower wrist tang is the REMINGTON UMC (circled) Trade Mark.  The same trade mark appears on the cresent steel butt plate. There are numerous inspectors stamps on different parts of the rifle, all usually a single capital letter.

The top flat of the barrel is marked in script “Remington” over “TRADE MARK” between simple the rear sights and the action.  On the first flat on the top LHS is “.22 SHORT, LONG / OR LONG RIFLE”.   In front of the rear sights is the full Remington address and all patent numbers, on the top flat, it reads;

“REMINGTON ARMS – UNION  METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO, REMINGTON WORKS ILION N.Y.USA  /  PEDERSONS PATENTS JAN 5 1909, OCT 12 1909, MAR 8 1910, NOV 21 1911, APR 16 1912”

Pederson was one of Remington’s best designers who came up with the Military 1903 Pederson Device during World War One.  This is a fine little rifle that many a child has probably learnt to shoot with and still seems to function perfectly well.  It has a good bore and is accurate. All over the rifle displays a pleasing plumb brown patina which would be hard to simulate, with wear on the high points and areas effected by moving parts.
