U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Rifle……….( F 827 ) SOLD

Created on October 15th 2019

A good example of the Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle

Of standard military specification.  Single shot, tip-up breech .45/70 cal’ rifle made by Springfield.  Measures 51.7/8″ overall.  The round barrel is 32.1/2″ long and the trigger pull is 13.1/4″ to centre.  Single piece American Walnut stock in very good condition with inspectors cartouches and Proof (circled P)  Flat lock let in flush with the American Eagle clutching arrows and “U.S. /  SPRINGFIELD” in front of hammer.  The lock is a three position mechanism.

Flat arch, case-colour hardened tipping block ( colours are strong ) with model designation just behind the hinge; “US / MODEL / 1873”  The rifles serial number can be seen above the “hut” at the rear of the breech opening and reads “258201” These were in production from 1873 until 1886. The serial number indicates production in 1883/84.

There are further markings at the breech end of the barrel; “V / P / eagles head /  P”  These are the federal proof and inspection markings.  Another major Proof mark is on the underside of the wrist, just behind the trigger guard, this is a large script “P” within a circle.  Finally a dated cartouche, within a rectangle on the LHS of the wrist, looks to be “S.W.P. / 1884”  for master armourer Samuel W. Porter.  All these marks add up to a government issued weapon for the Infantry.

Full length cleaning rod under barrel.  Two barrel bands with forward sling swivel and stacking hook attached to the forward fitting.  The bands carry the correct open “U” mark, turned on its side, from Springfield.  Contoured steel butt-plate with “U.S.” marked on upper tang.  Rear sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard.  Serrated trigger.  The rifle is fitted with the fourth type 1879 Buckhorn sights.  Both main components are marked with the correct “R” for rifle and the base has the “B” rolling fire mark.  The sights to 1200 yards on the ladder and 500 on the ramp.  Simple inverted “V” on a block as front sight.

The correct issue triangular socket bayonet is available for purchase.  Blueing is good all over.  There is an adjustable locking ring that locates behind the foresight to hold the bayonet in place.  The blade is marked with the letters “U.S”.  The rifle is mechanically sound and operates well.  It holds on each hammer position and the trigger release is good.  Ejector is present and fully functioning.  Strong three groove bore, no serious pitting.  Nitro proofed.  A good representative example of a rifle which served the U.S. military for many years and through several conflicts.
