Superb Starr .44 Percussion Double Action Army Revolver

Serial number  6269 H.  Six shot cylinder. .44 caliber percussion Double action with a 6″ round blued barrel.  Single steel blade front sight.  Blued finish all over except the hammer and loading lever, which are case colour hardened and still show some strong colours.  A good percentage of the high gloss blue finish still remains on most of the gun.  Most loses are evident where the user would have come into contact with the steel – above the black walnut grips on the frame both sides.  Also loses have occurred from ignition of the caps on the top of the back-strap.  There is a”drag” mark which has broken the surface of the blueing on the cylinder, between the cylinder stop recesses.  The nipples are all in fine condition with little corrosion at all.

Full framed revolver with an ingenious two stage trigger mechanism.  The conventional trigger cocks the hammer and positions the cylinder then at the last moment the main trigger acts upon a second trigger which releases the hammer.  When correctly adjusted the pull and brake can be timed to feel like one simultaneous smooth movement.

The second interesting feature of these robust Starr Army models is the opening frame.  A single turn-screw on the right just forward of the hammer, when removed will allow the frame to tip forward so exposing the cylinder completely and enabling it to be quickly and easily removed, at that point a loaded extra cylinder could be inserted and the revolver closed, screw replaced and the weapon would once again be ready for use.

The action frame, below the cylinder on this Starr Army is marked with the legend  “STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK”  on the left hand side and on the right with “STARRS PATENT JAN 15 1856”.  The serial number is strongly visible on the hinge underneath the loading lever and clearly says “6269 / H”  Whereas on this particular weapon the serial number on the cylinder is different, it reads “6296”  The last two digits have been transposed – possibly?   The serial number also appears underneath the hammer in the recess where the hammer lays when not in use, and, underneath the loading lever on the underside of the barrel. (Though only the back of the first six is visible without removing the lever.)

Many of the components on the revolver have factory inspectors initials stamped into them; here are a few of the visible ones;- “K” on the barrel and rear of the nipple shield on the frame, above and below the point where it breaks apart.  There is a “K” on the forward portion of the trigger guard.

The grips are Black American Walnut with Federal inspectors cartouches on both sides.  They are both boxed and appear to read “ADR.”  On the bottom edge of the grip there are 7 deep rough groves cut into the base of the grip of varying depth and shape ?

This Army revolver is mechanically excellent and as of this moment has not failed to “time-up” as they were renowned for doing.  It is a beautifully solid, functioning object.  The bore is simply the best I have seen.  It is perfect with no appreciable wear,  No pitting.  No rust.  No frosting.  6 strong groves bright and clean.  There is even finish still on the end of the muzzle and within each of the chambers.  One of the less well known Civil War revolvers which deserves a place in a collection.
