Excellent High Condition late Remington Derringer

The last production run of the most instantly recognisable Derringers of the American West.  Serial number “L 98848” on underside of lower barrel.  “XY” stamped into locking lug, adjacent. Finished in Blue with chequered rubber grips.  Condition and late serial number suggest one of the last produced in approximately 1935. Chambered in .41RF, over and under barrels which are 3″ long.  There is a simple flute between the barrels and a manual extractor mounted within the same on the rear of the LHS flute.  The firing pin mechanically alternates between top and bottom barrel each time the weapon is cocked.  Various stories and theories are attributed to the simple but clear anchor and arrow-head stamping on the lower frame beneath the opening catch.  Some of which have even hinted at involvement with war-time secret organisations like the OSS as close quarters defence weapons, especially for the female spies.  How easy it would be to go for your papers and instead take this in your hand as a last resort and aid to escape!  Its a nice idea and would be very effective at close range but as we always say, if only these things could talk!

Barrel release catch on RHS lower frame with nitra-blued lever.  Hinge intact and in good tight condition.  Single line address along the rib: “REMINGTON ARMS — U.M.C.CO.ILION, NY.”  Hammer is horizontally grooved not chequered (indicating late production).  Hinge is grooved as for a rear sight. Most importantly, when purchasing one of these pistols, the hinge is in perfect order.  No signs of repair or disturbance.  Colour to hammer is strong – no wear.  Concealed trigger appears upon cocking the hammer – also Nitra-blued.  Hard rubber grips are not worn but finely cross-hatched.

Finish intact virtually all over.  One bright patch where barrel release touches frame when opened.  Perfect clean rifling in excellent order, strong and deep with no pitting or misting. Amazing condition!  Mechanically, fully functioning.  All screws in perfect condition.  The blacking is intact all over except as mentioned earlier and a high edge here and there. This little derringer is truly a Sleeper in the real sense.  This is a clear case of buying well for the serious collector, and not surrounding oneself with inferior articles.
