whitney musket

An interesting .69 bore military Pattern Flintlock Musket by Whitney.

This Flintlock Musket is particularly interesting because of the decoration on the stock that is immediately apparent. This can either be attributed to American Native Indians or a state militia.

60″ overall, round barrel 44.1/2″ engraved at the breech in the French style “Mle 1816” and stamped “L.L.1821”, half round lock with brass pan, the plate deeply impressed “US / E. Whitney” and “NEW / HAVEN / 1838” the butt and full-stock shaved down to slender proportions, steel mounts including single barrel band, the butt-plate stamped “US”, for-end fitted with three long spiral engraved brass ramrod pipes and simple sheet brass for-end cap, the butt is decorated with hand made domed brass studs. The ramrod has  now been replaced

Condition: The whole musket is covered in a pleasing patina, the barrel, lock, trigger guard and mounts all showing the same effects of ageing. The stock is complete but with some small areas that have suffered more than others but once again covered in a pleasing patina. The mechanism is in good working order and  still sparks well – condition is good, considering it has lasted one hundred and seventy years.
