1847 Tower Percussion Musketoon………………SOLD

Created on December 13th 2011

Short barrelled Musket with 1847 dated Lock

An interesting musketoon with a “TOWER” 1847 dated lock and percussion ignition system.

Smoothbore with an excellent bore and simple front post sight which doubles as the bayonet lug.  The brass front nose cap shows the opening to accept the spring catch (AF) of the “Lovell” system of attachment.

Overall length is 42.1/2″.  Barrel length 26.3/4″.  Full length walnut stock, showing lots of signs of usage.  There are two splits in the fore-end which are secure at approximately the same point on either side about 6″ from the front end. The longest of these is 6″.  Three rusty iron cross pins appear to hold the barrel on.  The barrel is marked externally just infront of the percussion nipple with “crowned”  Birmingham proof and view marks and the number 17 (referring to the bore size)  On the other side of the barrel near the breech are the following stampings; “crown/TP/broard arrow”  then “”crown / D /7 ” and  “crown / broard arrow”   These are factory inspectors marks and war department acceptance stamps.  The barrel is mildly pitted externally all over and has a good even patina about it.

The lock is flat and held in place by two large steel screws which pass through the stock, the slotted heads resting in brass sockets.  The lock retains some colour towards the rear, behind the hammer.  Two thin boarder lines are engraved around the lock which just disappear at the front, in pitting.  There is a fine engraved Tudor crown over “V.R. over  “TOWER 1847”  and one faint vertical crown over a broard arrow stamping.  The hammer is in good condition with strong hatching on the thumb piece and a pleasing brown colour to it.   The action is mechanically fine. Recent replacement nipple.

Steel cleaning rod and two brass retaining pipes.  Brass trigger guard and brass butt plate.  The tang of the butt plate is engraved as follows; “4 / RP / 79”  this is most likely the unit markings and rack number.

£650.
