Colt 1861 Percussion Musket & Bayonet…………….SOLD

Created on March 9th 2009

Model 1861 Colt Rifled Musket and Bayonet

No visible serial number. 40″ round barrel.  .58 caliber. Bright finish. Full length Walnut stock. Colt produced about 75,000 of these fine rifled muskets between 1861 and 1865 when they were ordered by the Union during the Civil War.

The front sight doubles as the bayonet lug. The rear sight is a three leaf type which is graduated upto 500 yards. It has its correct iron ramrod inplace under the barrel. It also has its triangular socket bayonet which is marked “US” on the front face, and is in its leather, brass tipped scabbard with leather frog.

The lock plate is marked “1864” behind the hammer and “US / COLT’S PT.T.A MFG.CO / HARTFORD CT” in front of the hammer. The bolster is marked with a clear spread eagle motif.

The top of the barrel is marked “1863”. The top corner flat has “V/P/eagles head” proof marks and the side flat is marked “E.P.R.” Most of the other parts are marked with single letter inspector marks. All metal surfaces were finished bright. It has three barrel bandas and a cresent buttplate the upper tang marked with a clear “US” and proof mark.  There are two superb cartouches on the reverse side of the stock to the lock plate. There is a sling of brown leather attached.

The entire weapon is in fine condition, with only minor handling marks and speccles of minor corrosion. The action is extremely good and the bore is excellent. The stitching on the scabbard is complete and intact. This is a fantastic piece of history from America’s darkest hours and is worthy of a place in a fine collection where it will hold its own with ease.

It would be very hard to improve on this musket – a beautifully made weapon.
