MAUSER M71/84 in 11mm…….SOLD

Created on November 1st 2012

A very good 1888 Model 71/84 Bolt Action Mauser Rifle

A very nice example of the 71/84 Rifle made by Mauser works in Amberg (Bavaria)

Serial number 83649 on bolt, action and breech.  The rifle has copious Imperial German Arsenal inspection marks all over.  The finest on the breech where four marks sit side by side on the RHS  behind the rear sight.  This is a bolt action magazine fed rifle in Obsolete German 11mm caliber.  The actual bore size is marked on the same flat as the crowned “L” and reads “10,95”   The rifle is marked at the rear of the action “1888”.  It has advanced features for the time like a magazine cut-off switch to the left rear of the action.

The rifle is 50.3/4″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is 31.1/2″ long.  It has a one piece Walnut stock but they were not issued with hand-guards.  Simple straight handled bolt with safety flag to rear.  The side of the action is marked “I.G. Mod.71/84” in Gothic script.  This means Infantry Gewehr Model 71/84.  The split in model designation comes from the original production date of the single shot rifle and the 84 is the date of the conversion from single shot to magazine fed rifle.

Other markings on the breech signify the State Arsenal of Amberg, which built the rifle, this is the crowned “Amberg” on the top breech flat.  This ties in correctly, as expected, with the  crowned “L” on the LHS of the breech which signifies King Ludwig of Bavaria.  Condition wise this rifle is a good honest state.  The action which was finished in the white  is now, naturally a plumb/grey to brown.  The barrel seems to have maintained the most bluing and the trigger guard also has a good polished blue still showing through.

The one piece walnut stock has five crisp inspectors cartouches underneath to the rear of the trigger guard and another two on the side of the butt.  Flat steel butt-plate, two sling swivels, bayonet nose-cap and stacking rod. The bayonet lug, so mounted on the side of the front band suggests it would be a sword type bayonet with a catch which closes behind the lug when it has passed over and is in position.  Simple ladder sights graduated from 300 to  1400 meters.  These rifles are known to be highly accurate to shoot and as this one has a very good bore I believe it will be no exception to that rule.

Interestingly this rifle can be further researched as it still carries its unit markings on the butt-plate tang;  “B.2.R. / R 354”  From brief research this signifies 2nd Bavarian Regiment,  Rifle number 354 of the Recruitment Division.
